How does BioGrid Australia work?
BioGrid Australia’s data-linkage platform provides authorised researchers with secure access to hundreds of thousands of privacy-protected health records. These records are made available for BioGrid-enabled research by our members and collaborators. Each data contributor retains control of the access and use of their data and continues to host their data source(s). The following diagram illustrates how data is linked into the BioGrid Australia platform and how these de-identified data get delivered to authorised researchers. Detailed definitions of various aspects of the diagram are outlined below.
Below is an interactive diagram, place the cursor on selected images to provide more information on how BioGrid works. Download a PDF of the diagram or view our multimedia to learn more about BioGrid Australia.
Diagram Definitions
A Local Research Repository (LRR) is a server on a collaborating institution's computer network, which hosts replica copies of the institution's linked data sources. A list of these linked data sources are available on BioGrid Australia's website.
The Federated Data Integrator or Research Federator (FDI) is a BioGrid Australia server, which dynamically integrates data from linked data sources (via collaborating institution LRRs) in response to researchers' data queries. Data is not stored on the FDI.
Data is accessed via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection between BioGrid Australia and the collaborating institution. Data is encrypted when sent via the VPN.
Statistical Analysis System (SAS) is the suite of data interrogation, statistical analysis and reporting tools available through BioGrid Australia. This software is only available to a researcher once they have authorised access (via the BioGrid Australia Data Access Application System) to query de-identified data.
The Unique Subject Identifier (USI) is a unique patient number maintained by BioGrid Australia. The number allows data about an individual to be matched across data sources without revealing the individual's identity.
The Linkage Key Federator (LKF) is a BioGrid Australia server, which performs patient matching (across BioGrid-linked data sources) and USI allocation.
